Podcast #2: On Intelligence

onintelligence-200.jpgI first reviewed On Intelligence by Jeff Hawkins for The Sci Phi Show. I am including that review here. Also in this episode, I consider some of the topics I hope to discuss in future episodes. Besides intelligence we will be considering consciousness, emotions and feelings, the role of vision in brain research, what we can learn from people with brain damage and memory.

Please send me email or leave comments suggesting what topics you want to here about.

  3. One nitpick criticism regarding your comment in this podcast that you can’t have intelligence without consciousness. I disagree. Barring pansychism and other such philosophical leaps, most organisms on this planet have very simple nervous systems, with nothing resembling a cortex, yet they act intelligently. You only have to look at certain insects like jumping spiders, where recent research shows remarkably intelligent behavior for such a rudimentary nervous system, and I wouldn’t think most people would say those spiders have any consciousness (qualia etc, awareness sure, but the harder consciousness, no).

  4. Haig,

Thank you for your comment about my brief review of “On Intelligence.”

To be honest I do not remember saying that one can not have intelligence without consciousness, but if I did your point is well-taken.

I assume you are a new listener, so I hope you will become a regular. The point you bring up is a good starting point for discussion, so I hope you will consider starting a new thread on the Discussion Forum at http://brainscienceforum.com. Feel free to start a thread for Episode 2 or begin a new thread in the area on Consciousness, which is already pretty active.

Also, Jeff Hawkins will be a guest on an upcoming episode, so be sure to subscribe!

  5. I am in 8th grade honors English and I was just wondering if you could tell me a website where I could look up intelligence and brain research and how brain surgery can make you smarter. If you could e-mail me back, that would be great. Thanks for all your help. :)
    Sincerely,

  6. Jena,

Thank you for posting a comment on my site. I hope you realize you actually posted on the archive and not the active site at http://brainsciencepodcast.com?

There is no one website about intelligence and brain research, as I am sure you know if you have used Google. However, if you are interested in what sites other people like I suggest posting your question on the Discussion Forum at http://brainscienceforum.com. (You don’t have to reveal any personal information to join the forum.)

One thing I will say is that at the present time there is no way to improve intelligence with brain surgery. Current and past efforts have been focused on treating problems such as epilepsy. There is exciting recent research that involve implanting electrodes that allow paralyzed people to operate computers and it is hope that such technology might one day help be walk again.
